Plans submitted to turn Taunton take away into residential accommodation

PLANS have been submitted to convert a take-out accommodation on the ground floor and an owners accommodation on the first floor into a single residential dwelling in Taunton.

The change of use application was received by Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWT) on Wednesday June 14.

The plans are for former Chef Peking take-out in Upper High Street, which closed in 2018.

The design and access statement submitted to council stated: “This application seeks consent to change the use of the take-out and owner accommodation to one residential accommodation.

“The applicant is now looking to renovate the property and proposes to convert the existing takeaway into a lounge and dining room. The former take-out kitchen would become the main residential kitchen.

“The only physical change to the building would be to the existing facade of the store.

“The proposal is to remove the existing windows and doors and replace them with PVC casements and an entrance door that would match the adjacent buildings on the terrace.

“The old entrance to the store would become the main entrance to the house.

“The change in use to take-out sales would have a negligible impact on the street scene.

“The proposal would fit the rest of the terrace which are all residential accommodation.”

The application also states that the loss of a business at the location of the property would be ‘negligible’ as it is ‘off the main street and no longer realistically suitable as a store or retail unit’.

This request is one of 11 received by SWT for the Taunton Deane area during the week ending June 17, 2022.
